The GNOME 2.12 port is done for FreeBSD. You can get the official 2.12
release notes from http://www.gnome.org/start/2.12/notes/en/. However,
due to the slush in anticipation of 6.0-RELEASE, it will not be going
into the ports tree right away. We don't have a firm date on when 6.0
is going to be released yet, but it looks like GNOME 2.12 will be
imported in early October.

There is some good news. If you're willing to go through the merge
steps, you can start using it now. See
http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/docs/develfaq.html for instructions on
getting GNOME 2.12. The warnings about development code can generally
be ignored for the time being, however, there are still some
develop-class modules in the MarcusCom ports tree (e.g. gnumeric).

Packages for the Desktop have also been built for i386 and amd64
architectures (5.4 and 6.0 only at this time), and are available from
the GNOME Tinderbox. See
http://www.FreeBSD.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html#q21 for instructions on
obtaining Tinderbox packages. Note: the new gnome_upgrade212.sh script
supports upgrading from Tinderbox packages. Use the -p or -P options to
enable this feature.

Currently, there is one FreeBSD-specific known issue with GNOME 2.12.
GTK+-2-based Linux ports (e.g. acroread7) will not work due to changes
in the fontconfig cache file format. A solution is currently being
sought, but if you have access to a RedHat 9 RPM of fontconfig-2.3.2,
that would help tremendously.

We are also still looking for FreeBSD splash screens. Please submit
them to freebsd-gnome at FreeBSD.org. Be sure to check out the new FreeBSD
GNOME theme, Beastie (x11-themes/beastie), created by our very own ahze
and mezz.

Finally, per our previous announcement, GNOME 2.12 is not supported on
FreeBSD 4.X. The supported releases are 5.3, 5.4, 6.0, 5-STABLE, and
7-CURRENT. We will, however, be maintaining the GNOME Platform
(infrastructure libraries such as GLib, GTK+, libgnome, etc.) on 4.11
and 4-STABLE.
