FreeBSD 5.2.1 was a technology preview, and not a production release.
Therefore, when 5.3 was released, we wanted to encourage all 5.X users
to migrate as soon as possible.

If you upgrade FreeBSD to 5.3 first, you will be able to upgrade GNOME.
