totem and dvd

if i run totem as a normal luser, it whines it can not open
/dev/cdrom as it does not exist.  edit/prefs will not let me
select anything.

if i start it as root so it can read /dev/acd0, and i try to
open /dev/acd0, it whines

    "Totem could not play 'file:///dev/acd0'.  There is no
    plugin to handle this movie."

and i am not doing too well with google on this.  so clue
