Long delays in Gnome2 start up

Umm, if it works fine on root and other users then it must be problem 
somewhere in your primary user. So, if you reinstall GNOME and you might 
still have the same problem. :-) Can you try do the full one? Like this:

rm -rf .ICE* .Trash .Xauth* .gconf* .gnome* .gtk* .esd* .fonts.cache-1 
.meta* .nau* .recent* .thumb* .xscreen*

Also, there have few stuff in the /var/tmp/ like this:

gconfd-${user} mapping-${user} orbit-${user}

So, change from ${user} to your primary user then try to remove them. I 
don't know if it will help, but I think it's a worth shot. Also, be sure 
to check in the top or ps to make sure one of GNOME's app exit correct 
before you try to do the startx again. This is my last suggest what I can 
think of, before you want to reinstall GNOME.
