A few problems with X.org desktop

I had these problems, too. Indeed they went away after a 
# marcusmerge
and a
# portupgrade -a
and a
# reboot 
(!!!)
So I was lucky: No forced upgrade was necessary (which will take 
about three days on my PIII).
