I know there were changes in vte-0.11.11 that affect anti-aliasing. 
There were also some Xft changes in Mozilla 1.7.  I would suggest
looking through their respective Bugzilla's to see if they can shed any
light on this problem.  I doubt this problem is FreeBSD-specific.
