Make sure you're configuring with:

--build=i386-portbld-freebsd4.8

For example.  The configure patch really should apply, but if it
doesn't, you'll have to patch ltmain.sh to eliminate common Linux'isms
as well as poor assumptions about FreeBSD.  You can use the
patch-ltmain.sh from evolution-devel as a guide.
