nautilus icons have disappeared

I am using the default (gnome) set and it happens to me. Also, not
just the desktop icons, but most icons are lost, as well. A few
including the Screensaver and the Applications icon in start-here:///
still are seen.

I also got them back by copying the icons directory into ~/.icons, but
that is a bad work-around.
