I think that this is something totally different.
I noticed that a lot of time is spent in those functions because they are
called, at top level, multiple times for the same directory but represented with
different objects.  I also noticed that after each save there are two file
descriptors for the download directory and they stay permanently open.  After
some more digging I am sure that this is a result of the following bug:

The bug seems to be fixed with this commit:

But the change is not our version of gtk.
