The motherboard in question is an ASUS P5K-VM, with an Intel ICH9 SATA controller.

The problematic drive is physically disconnected from the machine at the moment, 
but if you think it would be helpful, I can take the new drive back out, 
reconnect the old one, and run smartctl on it later this evening.
