It's not difficult to discern at all. This is a volunteer project. No
one has volunteered to maintain this. Q.E.D.

No such decision has been made. See above.

There are other emulators in the ports right now that work pretty
well. I'm far from an expert, but qemu looks promising, and there
actually is development work happening to get xen working for FreeBSD.
If someone steps up and does the work to get newer vmware working, it
will likely be welcomed with open arms.
