NanoBSD fails to update

I am dding the _.disk_full image and then trying to run the updatep 
script as shown in the handbook. Evidently the script is not making the 
image right as it seems it cannot ever find ad1. I am using a sandisk 
512 mb flash cart. Would trying a gb card help me out at all?
