<http://www.freebsd.org/gnome/docs/faq2.html> says that you can just add 'gnome_enable="YES"' to /etc/rc.conf, but this doesn't work. (See <http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=335>, for example.)

Add gnome_enable="YES" to /etc/rc.conf and notice that hald doesn't start correctly.

It should instead say that you should add:

gdm_enable="YES"
hald_enable="YES"
dbus_enable="YES"
avahi_daemon_enable="YES"
avahi_dnsconfd_enable="YES"
