My usual assumption is that people thought about this when setting
up the current guess-the-langcode system.  In other words, there
must be a good reason.  The only one I can think of is the problem
of changing langcodes (like the change to X11-compatible names we
did some time back).

Yes, this could help a lot, because it makes it possible to set the
LANGCODE, maybe different binaries (especially for the generation
of .txt files, this seems to be broken for DE still), etc.
