Fiddling around longer, I realizes now a console message popping up whenever I try to
start the nVidia GPU. I have ignored that the whole time:

I'm no ACPI expert, but could this message inform me about some ACPI issues with
selecting the right device/display socket? I can also provide an ACPI dump, if requested
and secure.
