After hand-applying that change, re-building & re-installing the kernel
on my build machine, it is able to make the transition to multi-user
mode without issue.  Now running:

FreeBSD freebeast.catwhisker.org 10.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 10.0-CURRENT #1127  r249303M/249303:1000030: Tue Apr  9 11:19:25 PDT 2013     root at freebeast.catwhisker.org:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/GENERIC  i386
