Yes, this is the easiest way to do things:

1. Boot live CD, USB, w/e.
2. mount all of your filesystems.
3. make -C $DESTDIR/usr/src installworld DESTDIR=$DESTDIR

No loss of data. But given that you've already done the reinstall, I
suppose there's no way to go back now :/...
