I believe this was changed around SP2 for XP, and  Vista has always had
quick-removal for the devices it undestands to be external (eSATA still
gets detected as non-hotswappable unless you registry-magic-it).

However, this doesn't protect against pebcak-yanking the device you have
documents open from. It really doesn't. Just trust me, I've tried. ;)

Maybe this is something FreeBSD should consider? Maybe a hack in "mount"
 to allow the mount-option "is-removable", that tells the OS "don't
bother write-cache this" and "cleanse the cache when user yanks hardware"?
