moving to a newer version of binutils

hi everybody,

since there's a debate going on concerning moving to a different compiler or
switching to a more recent version of gcc i'd like to ask what the binutils
situation is right now? is somebody working on porting a more recent version?
the current version of gas used in freebsd (2.15) e.g. doesn't support
sse3/sse4.
