OK, I was wrong, I could give it a try now. :)
It seems to work! -DDEBUG=1 and no panic. Just to be sure I tried to  
revert the patch, and sure enough, solaris assert panic at that line.  
The backup script (aka. real world test) also did not panic, which it  
did before.
