My laptop (Acer TravelMate 4102) has this problem, too.
The workaround is:
1. Turn off radio switch.
2. sudo kldunload if_iwi
3. Goto 2. if console printed "firmware error."
4. Trun on radio switch.
5. Wi-Fi is workable now.
