Ah, I am sorry indeed.  I did not immediately realize you were not building
perl from ports (lang/perl5.8).

The trouble is related to certain changes in gcc, and was long corrected
both in perl's repository and in FreeBSD's perl port.  So basically, you
sort of got what you deserved.  :-)
