I believe that it also helps to turn off malloc debugging. For quite
awhile I've been doing
ln -s aj /etc/malloc.conf
Also, (though I'm not sure this is still necessary)
I've been adding
CFLAGS+=-DNO_MALLOC_EXTRAS
to /etc/make.conf.
