it's most probably a kernel problem but it's am-utils-6.1.4-pre
that's tickling it, older am-utils's work fine, and to make things
more complicated:
	- it works fine on 'similar' hardware, ie Intel SE7501WV2,
          but gets stuck on Intel SR1435VP2
	- it works if I add -r (remount) option to amd.

and as you requested:
/* config.h.  Generated by configure.  */
/* config.h.in.  Generated from configure.in by autoheader.  */

/*
 * Start of am-utils-6.x config.h file.
 * Erez Zadok <ezk @ cs.sunysb.edu>
 *
 * DO NOT EDIT BY HAND.
 * Note: generated by autoheader from configure.in.
