newfs limits? 10TB filesystem max?

MAXDSIZ probably. Put this in /boot/loader.conf, reboot, then try your
newfs:
kern.maxdsiz=1073741824
kern.dfldsiz=1073741824
That should give newfs 1GB to play with.
