I upgraded to 5.3 rc1 hoping to solve this, no luck, then I put the above in my kernel, but the pause after bootstrap is 3-4 minutes. Also when I did: 
laptop#sysctl hw.ata.atapi_dma 
hw.ata.atapi_dma: 1
After the 3-4 minute pause everything is mormal and I can mount cd0.
Hopefully this will be fixed in the next rc.
