Hmm, very strange.  It looks like mergemaster borked my files in
/etc/rc.d (i.e. I did not have any files in this directory after
running the mergemaster).  So, I booted into single user mode,
and did:  cp /usr/src/etc/rc.d/* /etc/rc.d
and that seemed to solve things....dunno why.
