Yes, that is a general problem: We'd have to extensively patch all if_*
module Makefiles to propagate the new option. There is:

this topic from the 5.2-Release TODO applies here! If you are planning
to investigate in that area, I could offer some starting points. I am
unsure how to do this "right" so I didn't start anything myself, but I
have some ideas ...
