Peeve: why "i386"?

I know what is meant by "i386" as do a zillion other people.  10 years ago
so did the same people.  If "i386" has gone out of fashion because "ia64"
is about to hit mainstream, then it seems a load of work for something
whose fate is only *about* to become "2nd-streamish".
