when doing:
# uname -a
FreeBSD  9.0-CURRENT FreeBSD 9.0-CURRENT #4: Fri Jun 10 01:30:12 UTC 2011     @:/usr/obj/usr/src/sys/PAE_KES  i386

you can see that this kernel was build on Fri Jun 10 01:30:12 UTC 2011
but from which sources it was compiled you do not know. For example I can fetch srouces on Jan 01 and compile them at Jun.

I think it will be beter to see that info instead of build date or they will complement each other
