>Description:
This is only the second time I have seen this happen. I think I rebooted the machine last time it happened.

ssh to remote machine, then su (to root) produced the following:

tigger at edward:~% su
Password:load: 1.19 cmd: su 58298 [ttyin] 0.00u 0.00s 0% 1308k
load: 1.19 cmd: su 58298 [ttyin] 0.00u 0.00s 0% 1308k
load: 1.19 cmd: su 58298 [ttyin] 0.00u 0.00s 0% 1308k
(each 'load:...' is a return press)

>From another terminal, `kill -9 58298' will kill the su call and display the password on the terminal where su was typed.

Interestingly, `su tigger' works fine (at a guess, because no password is entered). su to any other user also produces the issue.

The issue appears to have been around for a while:
http://unix.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/FreeBSD/questions/2004-07/0148.html

and this one is similar, but different:
