This PR covers a version of FreeBSD that has been out of support for some
time--unfortunately it wasn't addressed sooner :-(.  If you're still
experiencing problems along these lines with recent FreeBSD versions,
please let us know.  Sorry about it taking so long for someone to get to
this PR.
