After updating to 6.1 from 6.0 (where kate worked!) and updating the ports *** ALL *** via CVSUP with the usual:

cd /usr/src
make update
make buildworld
make kernel KERNCONF=LAPTOP9
reboot

mergemaster -p
make installworld
mergemaster
reboot

portsdb -uU
portupgrade -arR
 
I find kde 3.5.2. Firing kate, it invariably fails with the following backtrace
