you mean why mdconfig the msdos part? Because at the time I was 
modifying the disk image, I didn't have the sd-card in the machine.
Earlier on, I was trying (and failing) to get ssd-boot working.

The notes I posted are more a "this is what I did" rather than a 
how-to.
