The messages appeared in u-boot and continued into loader.

The system has since been updated to 
FreeBSD 12.0-ALPHA8 r339018 GENERIC

The unprintable characters are my attempts to
use enter-tilda-control-b to start the debugger,
which were seemingly ignored. 

Not sure what to make of things like
"warning, bad CRC". Far as I can remember, that's normal and harmless.
I'm less sure about the "Failed, -5" message; I don't recall seeing
that before, but neither did I look for it.
