[The below is from the console port history from before your note.
The Pine64+ 2GB is doing a buildworld buildkernel that will not
complete for some time.]

From a reboot after having deleted /boot/kernel/linker.hints :

Mounting local filesystems:.
ELF ldconfig path: /lib /usr/lib /usr/lib/compat /usr/local/lib /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.26/mach/CORE
Building /boot/kernel/linker.hints

then later rebooting again:

VT: init without driver.
KLD file umodem.ko is missing dependencies


kldref for cross-builds could still be a problem but it
need not be the only one.
