R-PI fixes for dhclient/sshd?

I've just committed the fix to HEAD (r259936.)

Thanks to everyone for helping get this debug, Ian for figuring out
what the offending commit was, and zbb for the reverted patch.
(And Michael for testing it.)

I'll MFC it to 10 in a few days. I'll then ask gjb to MFC it to the
releng branch.
