Strange - now that this is an UFS formated media:
MAC 0:e:42:2:0:21
Not ufs

Default: /boot/kernel/kernel.gz.tramp

I've found -DUFS1_ONLY in the boot2 Makefile.
Sounds like I should newfs the media and restart...
