Makes sense, so my revised plans are now (thinking out loud):

 * prepare two slices, ad4s1 and ad4s2
 * install 6.x to ad4s1a, and boot into 6.x
 * while on 6.x
   o patch 7.0 sources and build world and kernel
   o install 7.0 world and kernel (DESTDIR=/dev/ad4s2a)
 * boot into 7.x (how do I specify that I want to boot from
   ad4s2a?

Other than that I see no other options. I cannot rely on
using the FreeBSD-7.0 install disk to install 7.0 to the 2nd
slice, as the installer will boot a 7.0 kernel wich is
broken with respect to the chipset in this Dell SC1435 ... I
can't trust the installed files.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Fernan
