Why is MySQL nearly twice as fast onLinux/AMD64Vs.FreeBSD/AMD64? (fwd)

sadly, we've put this on the mysql list, freebsd-amd64 and
freebsd-threads, even offering $500 to whomever steps up and figures out
how to get this performance bottleneck resolved (and access to our servers
if needed) - and the discussion seems to have died out.
