From mattst88 at gmail.com Sat Jan 3 20:44:43 2009 From: mattst88 at gmail.com (Matt Turner) Date: Sat Jan 3 20:44:50 2009 Subject: Looking for Alpha-interested users and developers Message-ID: Hi, Though I don't know the history and the reasons, I'm sad to see FreeBSD dropping Alpha support. What I do know is that there is still Alpha hardware in use. Alpha fans are still working in places to fix bugs and bring new software to the platform. Recently, I've been trying to build the Alpha/Linux community once again. One way that I've done this was to import Alpha hardware from Japan to distribute to interested users in North America and Europe. Another way is by encouraging people to join the #alpha IRC channel on Freenode. Finally, I've set up a Wiki at AlphaLinux.Org [1] that is always in need of more content. I wrote a couple of articles [2] describing some of the problems we're facing with Alpha, some specific to Linux. I hope this email reaches some people who are still interested in Alpha and would like to see theirs live on. So, in short: 1) Join the IRC channel 2) Contribute whatever you can to the Wiki (specifically pictures of Alpha systems and motherboards [3]) 3) Take a look at some of the problems in front of us and help find a solution This isn't meant as an advertisement for Linux, but a sincere plea for help and support from fellow open source developers and Alpha fans. I have lots of Alpha hardware here but no Linux and no OpenBSD and it is all old: Alphaserver 4100 running OpenVMS 7.1 (my workstation) Whitebox DEC PC164 running FreeBSD 5.something (semi-retired) Whitebox DEC PC164 Whitebox UP2000 with a Samsung(?) motherboard DEC AXP150 running Tru64 Unix 4.0F At work I have: 2 Compaq Alphaserver DS20 running Tru64 Unix 5.1 Compaq Alphaserver DS25 running Tru64 Unix 5.1 Compaq Alphaserver ES45 running Tru64 Unix 5.0 All of these will remain in service for another one to three years and then I can take them all and create a lovely OpenVMS cluster. I have documentation and firmware for all the above which I would be like to make available to anybody who might find a use for it. -- Richard Loken VE6BSV, Unix System Administrator : "Anybody can be a father Athabasca University : but you have to earn Athabasca, Alberta Canada : the title of 'daddy'" ** richardlo@admin.athabascau.ca ** : - Lynn Johnston From bugmaster at FreeBSD.org Mon Jan 12 03:06:48 2009 From: bugmaster at FreeBSD.org (FreeBSD bugmaster) Date: Mon Jan 12 03:06:59 2009 Subject: Current problem reports assigned to freebsd-alpha@FreeBSD.org Message-ID: <200901121106.n0CB6lMj091906@freefall.freebsd.org> Note: to view an individual PR, use: http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=(number). Currently I use a Sun to do the same job. The only thing I'd still like to do is port *BSD to the DS15, just because it's possible. But these boxen are pretty much impossible to find and insanely expensive (5k euro). Mainly because most customers were smart enough to buy the bigger boxes (ds25, 45) and because of common hardware failures. -- Sten Spans "There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in."
