Hmmm, during the flailing around something must have changed because
/stand/sysinstall started to recognize the mlxd0 and I started a Standard
installation.

I'm guessing maybe

bsdlabel -B mlxd0

or

bsdlabel -B mlxd0c

did the trick but I'll never really know.
