UW2 cards don't like to run at UW2?

895 -- the 896 is mostly just two 895's on the same silicon.

You've checked termination, cables, etc..?  I wonder if there is
something in your card's option ROM that isn't getting set on the Alpha
vs. i386.

Maybe try just one drive at a time?
