OK. I've run the new patch and reinstalled acpi.

My system will now boot without problem, and shows none of the error messages relating to acpi in /var/log/messages. Thanks for this.

It now powers off sporadically. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't.

But it's certainly a whole lot better than it was, so thanks for all your help.
