I feel nervous correcting jhb, but I think he had a metal mis-fire
here. I believe that he meant to say "You have to use the acpi_video(4)
driver (kldload acpi_video)".

In my case, I have acpi_video_load="YES" in /boot/loader.conf (brining
the ways to do this up to 3).
