Comments are welcome. See the cpufreq(4) man page: debug.cpufreq.lowest Lowest CPU frequency in MHz to offer to users. This setting is also accessible via a tunable with the same name. This can be used to disable very low levels that may be unusable on some sys- tems. I think this is what you want. My new problems with ACPI under FreeBSD 7.0 - described in another thread - gave me an idea to try older FreeBSD version: it was V5.3, which I tested using Freesbie V1.1 live-CD. Neither that Abit BE6-II V2.0, nor Gigabyte GA-6BX7 made any ACPI-related problems. So the only conclusion is, that it wasn't "broken ACPI implementation" (which you wrote immediately, without taking any closer look at the reported problem), but the FreeBSD's ACPI drivers have been spoiled somewhere between versions V5.3 and V7.0. Attached you'll find two "verbose dmesgs", taken from within V5.3: - freesbie_v.txt.gz was made while working with Abit - freesbie2_v.txt.gz was made while working with Gigabyte That's (probably) all I can do to help to trace the problem (of course, if FreeBSD developers care about reported bugs at all). Pay attention, that it's not just "fixing things especially for me" - because such mobos were manufactured in thousands of exemplars, and plenty of them around, still in use. -- pozdrawiam / regards Zbigniew Baniewski -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Just to give your bug report some perspective, that's a Pentium 3 system and it runs with acpi disabled just fine. I know everyone thinks their problem is the most important, but please understand that sometimes you have to take up the gauntlet and join the team. -- Nate From zeuz_netraptor at hotmail.com Sat Aug 16 13:02:08 2008 From: zeuz_netraptor at hotmail.com (ZeuZ Diavolo Deimos) Date: Sat Aug 16 13:02:15 2008 Subject: HP Pavilion dv2000 ACPI Problems Message-ID: Well, recently I moved in full time to fBSD. I had problems installing the stable and current versions until one of the latest snapshots. Now My system boots up, and works "partially fine" it tends to over-heat even when powerd is set to minimum energy cost. I?ve loaded all the ACPI modules (even the one for ASUS, even now I?ve got it blacklisted because it caused system instability) The resume-suspend events do not work either. There?s also another weird thing, my processor wasnt able to set the frecuency lower than 800mhz (Turion 64x2 TL-52) and the Gnome applet reports most of the time lower spuns(like 100mhz-500mhz). Also, the disk tends to do some weird noises only while in fBSD. Performance is bad overall too. I?m using i386 version of 7.0-STABLE-200807 with the GENERIC kernel. Also, and another thing I wanted to talk about is b43/bcm43xx driver portability from Linux to BSD, since I?ve got to check that NetBSD and OpenBSD have support for that card, still it?s not work-able in freeBSD, unless you use the evil project (ndis*) wich makes the system unstable, and in my particular case, it doesn?t work at all. Any help/contribution is welcome, I stand by to see and hear about what further data should I bring in. Cheers. Note that futzing with the RTC might break the periodic clock interrupts which would explain the breakage you are seeing with top not working, etc. I would try setting 'debug.acpi.block_bad_io=1' to disable access to these registers altogether. We should probably consider changing this to block by default like other OS's (by default we still allow access to "sensitive" I/O ports and just emit a warning). -- John Baldwin From imobachgs at gmail.com Mon Aug 18 17:48:08 2008 From: imobachgs at gmail.com (=?ISO-8859-1?Q?Imobach_Gonz=E1lez_Sosa?=) Date: Mon Aug 18 17:48:15 2008 Subject: Video doesn't work after resume (Latitude D410) Message-ID: <5f0cf48c0808181020r72e639e4l42e1952b85da1608@mail.gmail.com> Hi all, I'm having problems when resuming my Dell Latitude D410 after suspend (from S3). This doesn't follow at all. A more reasonable explanation is that 7.0 is more reliant on correctly implemented ACPI than older versions of FreeBSD and so the breakage in your ACPI is more obvious. Your mobo is very old and probably includes only the minimal information needed to make MS Windoze work. The easiest work-around is to disable ACPI. -- Peter Jeremy Please excuse any delays as the result of my ISP's inability to implement an MTA that is either RFC2821-compliant or matches their claimed behaviour. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... In which case, it will be easier for you to find the "lost" code. There seems to be a communications gap between you and the rest of us. What we are trying to say is that FreeBSD has not removed code that worked around the bugs in your mobo's ACPI. Rather FreeBSD is now relying on ACPI functionality that it never previously exercised. This means that the breakage in your ACPI is more apparent. We seem to have jumped threads at some point. I thought the conclusion from April's thread was that you were just going to disable ACPI on your BE6-II. If you want to investigate the problems with yur GA-6BX7, you could start by setting VERBOSE_SYSINIT (look in kern/kern_tc.c to see what it does) and then start adding printf()s to find exactly which subsystem is hanging and where it is hanging. -- Peter Jeremy Please excuse any delays as the result of my ISP's inability to implement an MTA that is either RFC2821-compliant or matches their claimed behaviour. -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <351548.78152.qm@web53906.mail.re2.yahoo.com> ? I have a Dell Inspiron 1526 laptop.?? It has 2 AMD Turion 64 TL-62 processors.? Is ACPI v3 support going to be enabled on a future freebsd7-stable or 8-release ?? ? The reason I ask? is that I can load openbsd 4.3 i386 on it; even though it only the UP version loads, when I set the processor in the lowest powernow run state (the apm driver refers to it as cool perf mode), the battery can last approx 3 hrs.? The amd64 version of openbsd 4.3 with the? MP version loads and behaves the same way. However pcbsd7 alpha (and freebsd v7 realease, as well as pcbsd1.5/freebsd 6.3) only reports a max battery life of about one and a half hours.? Is this an acpi issue, or is it something else, such as a powernow driver issue.? With OpenBSD there is support for powernow K8, which I think K8 means athalon/turion 64bit processors. I can help test out changes to acpi, if needed, with reagrds to amd64 turion processors, as I have a Toshiba Satallite A215 model as well as the Dell 1526. Regards, Edward A. Had a bunch of problems, ehci, radeon, etc, but most were fixed by someone since then. One thing I still miss though is ACPI suspend/resume. Browsing through dev/acpica I found out that this feature set is simply disabled outside i386 (several #ifndef __i386__) and figured that maybe that's just because no one appeared to test it. Well, I hereby volunteer to test this. I have already removed the ifndefs and achieved a machine hang when tried to suspend. I have some experience with 80386 initialization (almost obsolete), I am a capable programmer (able to keep the indentation of an existing source file), and may be able to develop some new code if someone points me to the right documents at Intel or AMD. I am partially available on weekends. Will someone involved with suspend/resume on i386 help me on this? Would it be necessary to move to -CURRENT? Where should I start? You called me? :-) >Would it be necessary to move to -CURRENT? >Where should I start? Copy the code to amd64/acpica/ then try to run as it is. In amd64, you have to preserve many registers than i386, so the code should be more ABI aware. http://2008.asiabsdcon.org/papers/P9A-paper.pdf To debug lowest part of resume code, you may want to use BEEP debug. I wrote incomplete SMP suspend/resume code 3 months ago. http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-acpi/2008-May/004879.html Indeed, I reserve 10GB partition to my primary laptop to develop amd64 suspend/resume.But I don't even install it yet. So if you implement it, I'm willing to test it :-P. Summary of changes for version 20080829: 1) ACPI CA Core Subsystem: Completed a major cleanup of the internal ACPI_OPERAND_OBJECT of type Reference. Changes include the elimination of cheating on the Object field for the DdbHandle subtype, addition of a reference class field to differentiate the various reference types (instead of an AML opcode), and the cleanup of debug output for this object. Lin Ming, Bob Moore. BZ 723 Reduce an error to a warning for an incorrect method argument count. Previously aborted with an error if too few arguments were passed to a control method via the external ACPICA interface. Now issue a warning instead and continue. Handles the case where the method inadvertently declares too many arguments, but does not actually use the extra ones. Applies mainly to the predefined methods. Lin Ming. Linux BZ 11032. Disallow the evaluation of named object types with no intrinsic value. Return AE_TYPE for objects that have no value and therefore evaluation is undefined: Device, Event, Mutex, Region, Thermal, and Scope. Previously, evaluation of these types were allowed, but an exception would be generated at some point during the evaluation. Now, the error is generated up front. Fixed a possible memory leak in the AcpiNsGetExternalPathname function (nsnames.c). Fixes a leak in the error exit path. Removed the obsolete debug levels ACPI_DB_WARN and ACPI_DB_ERROR. These debug levels were made obsolete by the ACPI_WARNING, ACPI_ERROR, and ACPI_EXCEPTION interfaces. Also added ACPI_DB_EVENTS to correspond with the existing ACPI_LV_EVENTS. Removed obsolete and/or unused exception codes from the acexcep.h header. There is the possibility that certain device drivers may be affected if they use any of these exceptions. The ACPICA documentation has been added to the public git source tree, under acpica/documents. Included are the ACPICA programmer reference, the iASL compiler reference, and the changes.txt release logfile. Example Code and Data Size: These are the sizes for the OS-independent acpica.lib produced by the Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0 32-bit compiler. The debug version of the code includes the debug output trace mechanism and has a much larger code and data size. Previous Release: Non-Debug Version: 79.7K Code, 16.4K Data, 96.1K Total Debug Version: 153.9K Code, 48.4K Data, 202.3K Total Current Release: Non-Debug Version: 79.7K Code, 16.4K Data, 96.1K Total Debug Version: 153.7K Code, 48.2K Data, 201.9K Total 2) iASL Compiler/Disassembler and Tools: Allow multiple argument counts for the predefined _SCP method. ACPI 3.0 defines _SCP with 3 arguments. Previous versions defined it with only 1 argument. iASL now allows both definitions. iASL/disassembler: avoid infinite loop on bad ACPI tables. Check for zero-length subtables when disassembling ACPI tables. Also fixed a couple of errors where a full 16-bit table type field was not extracted from the input properly. acpisrc: Improve comment counting mechanism for generating source code statistics. Count first and last lines of multi-line comments as whitespace, not comment lines. Handle Linux legal header in addition to standard acpica header. I'm going to just forward your message to freebsd-acpi@ because your symptoms (two cpu frequencies only 1 unit apart (one bogus), powerd therefore not shifting to a real lower frequency, so running flat out all the time) came up there several times this year on some machines. While I can't recall the details, nor have access to my own archives currently, I'm pretty sure there was a patch - not sure if it covers or can be applied to 6.3 though. You could browse the -acpi archives for this, but hopefully someone will show mercy and provide a pointer or two, if not directly help out? As Wes since mentioned, 61C isn't hot at all (at that frequency anyway) but still it'd be better to get the mangled cpu freqs sorted out so that powerd can do its thing properly. Well, so much for passive_cooling. :=\ > > Also, have you set anything in BIOS regarding power usage, speedstep or > > any other settings that might get reflected into your boot ACPI setup? Initially we left the BIOS power settings the way the OEM set them (Vista). We are able to choose from one of Dynamic, High or low not much else to play with in the way of power settings (ACPI) with the exception of LCD and/or letting the OS control devices. Unable to directly set CPU steppings/freq settings within this BIOS. > > And, are you loading acpi_toshiba(4)? Better yet, here's the short version, in the kernel 'device acpi_toshiba' does not work for us on this machine unless we neglected to make an accompanying needed acpi entry. Aa we understand it, we were to only add 'device acpi_toshiba' to load the neccessary acpi toshiba extras. Using 'acpi_toshiba_load="YES"' in the /boot/loader.conf -and- using 'kldload acpi_toshiba' from the cli works like a charm but has no positive affect on the current discussion (heat). > > > > Secondly, in its own window or vty, as root, run /etc/rc.d/powerd stop > > > > (if it's running) then run 'powerd -v' which runs in foreground and says > > > > exactly what it's doing re shifting CPU frequency under various loads. idle time > 90%, decreasing clock speed from 2201 MHz to 2200 MHz^M idle time > 90%, decreasing clock speed from 2201 MHz to 2200 MHz^M idle time > 90%, decreasing clock speed from 2201 MHz to 2200 MHz^M ^Ctotal joules used: 41737.500 > > > > > > > > It's also useful to watch the temperature(s) directly over the time, see > > > > acpi_thermal(4) and try logging those sysctls periodically in a script. The following data is the result of the concerns I have; running too hot. These figures are the lowest temperatures this machine idles while FreeBSD is installed and running. The temperatures shown herein only rise with use but never go lower than what we're showing here when the laptop returns to idle.
