The whole point of this exercise is to eliminate the .sh suffix so
that this script is not sourced into the shell. I haven't seen anyone
suggest that the functionality of sourcing it into the shell is what
they want to preserve, so I really don't think this is relevant.

I've also said on several occasions that if the users object to having
it removed based on seeing the warnings that we should change it to
just 'early' and remove the deprecation warning.

Now can we please stop trying to preserve something before we're sure
that it's really something that users want and need?
