What about netbooting on other architectures?  If I understood your first 
change correctly, it would let me netboot alpha or sparc64 with a GENERIC 
kernel by setting some hints instead of having to compile a custom kernel.  
It seems to me that being able to tweak these settings from the loader w/o 
having to recompile the kernel is a definite win.
