I wonder if that will suffer from the same problem as umodem - 
http://www.FreeBSD.org/cgi/query-pr.cgi?pr=kern/25632

ie It might not be all plain sailing :(

I have see the bug mentioned manifest itself, but I have only used umodem, not 
ucomm devices.
