That may all be true and good, but at least in the past the intel driver
simply refused to work properly with my hardware detected as "<Intel
8285xM (85xGM GMCH) SVGA controller> on vgapci0" (on a ThinkPad R50e):
the picture had distortions in it and it may have even frozen the
machine when 3d support was on (I am not sure about the latter). In
contrast, the i810 driver "just works" also with 3d support (although it
also has problems in that I cannot seem to be able to set the size of
the video RAM that the card should use, but that did not affect much
so I do not care.) 

I will try the intel driver if it has become any better in the meantime,
but this is just a FYI, I am probably not the only one in this
situation.
